5 /5 Bryan Edwards: I was gifted an incredible American Hat Co. 10X cowboy hat by a great friend — and that started a pretty special experience. I was recommended to Manny, the hat shaper and hat artist at Arctic Hats in Salinas (El Primo — one of their family’s four stores). Manny has that old-school craftsmanship and creative touch that’s getting harder and harder to find. He shaped another hat for me last week and we immediately hit it off. Cowboy hats are personal — they tell a story about the person wearing them, the same way a good tailor or barber understands their client. Manny gets that. This week he reshaped six of my hats. Then I bought a steel grey American Hat Co. 10X from him under one condition:
“Do you. Do your damnedest.” After talking hats (and life) for a couple hours, I stepped out to take Senta! for a quick potty break — complete trust. When I came back, the hat was finished… and perfect. I had nothing to suggest, nothing to change — just respect and a thank you. I may have to go back to work just to afford more of Manny’s shaping. We’ve already picked out a few vintage projects vintage hats I have… and I’m pretty sure I’ll be buying more hats. Some craftsmanship you don’t just buy — you experience it.

5 /5 Oldschool: I just received my online order for my American Hat Co. 1804 hand shaped hat from El Primo Western Wear and this hat is fantastic! This particular style is a blond sisal weave with a 6” crown, I chose the 4 1/4” brim. Great hat, very light weight. I submitted my shaping instructions within the online shaping submission blocks and whomever shaped my hat is a true craftsman! I didn’t have to have nor did I request any ongoing dialogue over the shaping process which is ideal for me as I’m rarely available. I couldn’t be more pleased with this hat! It came out exactly how I described with my unique shaping instructions. I highly recommend this store for its quick turnaround and professional service if you’re looking for a custom shaped hat with an online order! Easy uncomplicated order process, quick fulfillment, careful packaging and fast shipping and amazing hand work! Keep in mind that each particular hat blank has limits on how it may shaped considering its material and dimensions no matter the brand. I immediately recognized the craftsmanship of the hatter with the cutter bumps I requested… superbly skilled with subtle manipulation of the material without hard miscreasing lines. Beautiful work. I was looking for a modern West Texas punchy style hat with my individual shaping preferences and El Primo knocked it out of the park! Thank you El Primo, I’ll be back!

The staff were incredibly helpful — they took the time to explain the different brands, prices, and hat shapes, which was perfect since I didn’t know much going in. Once I chose my hat, they even shaped it exactly to my preferences. I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out! Such a friendly and knowledgeable team, and my new hat will be the best souvenir to take home. Highly recommend this place!

5 /5 Alan Dye: They actually have a couple of retail locations within a block or so of each other on Alisal street, so make sure you visit all of them. Larger retail location in a strip mall area is the largest retail footprint and has a top quality hat shaping bar (Arctic Hatters) and very qualified and skilled hat shapers. Broadest inventory of western hats with focus on American Hat Co and Stetson, but you find a lot of other brands in here as well including a few from Vaqueros Finest, and other brands. Excellent staff, friendly and helpful. Bought a Stetson El Patron at the original location across the street (small, but a ton of inventory stacked in there) and brought it across to have the shape modified (wings brought down so it looked less like a taco on my head) and was treated very well. Have recommended to several friends who have all had great experiences here. Fonz and Manny do a lot of the shaping and both are excellent.

He took the time to walk me through the different styles and history of cowboy hats, making the whole process personal and fun. The final hat turned out perfect — exactly what I was hoping for. Manny has a true talent for customizing hats to fit each client, and it shows in the details.
