1 /5 Jay Ay: I recently visited Route 21 at Sugarloaf Mills to return an item and experienced extremely unprofessional customer service.
When I approached the register and explained that I needed to make a return, the manager, Maria, immediately responded in a rude and dismissive manner, stating that the store does not issue refunds and only offers store credit. I accepted the policy without argument and simply mentioned that it would have been helpful for that information to be clearly communicated verbally at the time of purchase, especially since I have been a customer at Rue for years and previous return experiences were different.
Rather than responding professionally, Maria became defensive and argumentative, repeatedly insisting that the policy was posted around the register. While I understand the policy was displayed, my comment was basic customer feedback, not a complaint about the policy itself. The interaction escalated unnecessarily due to her tone, condescension and overall inability to handle a routine customer interaction calmly.
The situation became uncomfortable enough that another manager had to step in and complete the transaction while Maria was asked to go to the back.
I fully understand that stores may have stricter policies during business changes, and I had no issue accepting store credit. However, customers should not be met with hostility for asking reasonable questions or offering feedback. I hope management reviews this incident and places greater emphasis on professionalism and customer service standards.
